About the workIn this ideal art academy, representatives of the various arts can be seen producing ambitious works. For example, a painter is working on a multi-figure history painting, while a sculptor carves an intricate marble statue. The foundation of all the arts is the study of the human body. This image was created at a time when the first art academies were being founded. It was designed by the Dutchman Jan van der Straet, who lived in Italy. In 1578, his compatriot Cornelis Cort turned it into an engraving, which the engraver Bartolomeo Mazza copied shortly afterwards.
