About the workThe wooden block for ‘Weg mit Bäumen (Path with Trees)’ was created as early as 1911, but German artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff did not print the sheet until 1919. Trees are an important element of the design. The grey sky was printed with a separate wooden plate, the visible grain of which differs greatly from the dark areas of the trees in the foreground. The white outlines emphasise the contrast of the two different woods. Schmidt-Rottluff also produced the woodcut in a coloured version: the sky is red and the black areas are dark blue.
