About the work As the daughter of the botanist Georg von Martens, Luise von Martens painted plants from an early age. This study of a young, introverted woman may have been created during her artistic training in Düsseldorf. At that time, women were not admitted to the art academy. Therefore, von Martens studied privately under the Düsseldorf painter Carl Ferdinand Sohn between 1850 and 1852. She then settled in her hometown of Stuttgart. In addition to portraits and genre paintings, she also created land- and cityscapes and illustrated a study by her brother, who was a zoologist.
