About the workAt a height of almost 130 centimetres, this vase would have been a challenge for the glassworks. After blowing, the vessel would have had to cool down for several hours in a special furnace so that it did not crack. This is presumably why the foot could only be mounted later, because otherwise it would have warped under the weight when it was cooling. During the general upsurge in English arts and crafts in the second half of the nineteenth century, glass art experienced a particular boom. Items of this size were eye-catching spectacles at universal exhibitions.
