About the workWhen Karl Schmidt-Rottluff founded an artists’ group with his fellow students in Dresden in 1905, he suggested the name “Die Brücke” (The Bridge), which he said would “lead from one bank to the other”. In his works, too, he repeatedly focused on riverside landscapes, like this Russian or Latvian shoreline that he became familiar with during the First World War when he was a member of a unit building roads and fortifications. Flat lines and pointed shapes against a blue background are combined like stage scenery to depict a waterside settlement.
