About the workAgain and again, the Cologne artist Josef Mangold turned to his paintings, which were carefully composed down to the last detail. Conservators’ examination of this still life revealed an underpainting that suggests a former bulbous vase and a tablecloth. The primroses and the ace of spades are rendered in an almost hyperrealistic manner – the mysterious symbolism behind the sober depiction remains ambiguous. The oeuvre of Mangold, who taught himself to paint, comprises only a few works due to his slow and careful method.
