About the workLike a breastplate with four straps, this piece of iron traces the contours of the human torso. But rather than armour, Joseph Beuys’ template was a medical back brace. He made a replica of a plaster cast that belonged to the daughter of one of his neighbours, the artist Gotthard Graubner, which was used to treat her back condition. The result is a fragile contradiction between protection and degeneration: the robust metal of the support is being visibly eaten away by rust, as if by a disease.
