Hungarian on a Grey Mare, ca. 1851
Watercolour over pencil on yellowish-white paper, wash, hightened with white
Sheet dimensions18,2 × 14,5 cm
About the workThe rider returns the viewer’s gaze with a grim expression. Does he fear that the foal, which is currently nursing from the gray mare, might be disturbed? The rider is a Csikós, a herdsman who guards herds of horses on the Hungarian steppe on behalf of farmers or large landowners. The watercolor served as a model for a lithograph that Wilhelm Camphausen published in 1851 in the Düsseldorf Künstler-Album under the title “Hungarian.” The German artist enjoyed great success with equestrian scenes and battle paintings and received numerous public commissions.
