GDR Black, 2018

“Born in Zwickau in 1984, the artist Henrike Naumann combines popular furniture and everyday design from the post-reunification period with GDR art, confronting viewers with questions about consumption, identity, beauty and ugliness. I am delighted that the Friends of the Kunstpalast acquired 'DDR Noir: Schichtwechsel' (DDR Noir: Shift Change) in 2019 because it is so thought-provoking.” Tatjana Kimmel, Director of the Friends of the Kunstpalast
“What fascinates me about Henrike Naumann’s work is the way she deals with history. Forgotten and repressed things become visible. This is very much in the spirit of William Faulkner and Christa Wolf: ‘The past is not dead, it is not even past.’” Steffen Krautzig, until 2023 Research Associate, Education

About the workHenrike Naumann’s installation seems to have come straight from another time. The work consists of a wall unit like those imitating designer furniture that were fashionable in the new federal states after German reunification in 1990. Inside are neatly stacked crockery, a grandfather clock and two paintings by the Zwickau painter Karl-Heinz Jakob, Naumann’s grandfather. The artist thus establishes a link between her generation and Jakob’s, who lived in the GDR. Both of them articulate their own impressions through art – whether from direct experience or a historical distance.
