About the workWho has the upper hand in this photograph? This picture by Jesco Denzel, an official German government photographer, is an example of the role of photography in politics. The shot was shared widely on social media on the same day it was taken – by supporters of both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Donald Trump. The image differs from other press photos in that it eschews an unambiguous display of rankings and challenges the viewer to scrutinise power relations.
