About the workAfter returning from Italy to his native Flanders in 1627, the painter Anton van Dyck created numerous portraits of artists, scholars and other important figures of his time. His drawings were reproduced as copperplate engravings and etchings by various engravers and published in a collection titled “Iconography” from 1632 onwards. The immediacy and vitality of the portraits, which were produced in large editions, reached a wide audience and cemented van Dyck’s fame as an outstanding portraitist throughout Europe.
