About the workAt the age of twelve, Conrad Felixmüller began attending the Royal Conservatory in Dresden in order to deepen his musical education. Two years later he was accepted into the city’s Royal Academy of Arts. In 1912, Arnold Schönberg’s atonal recitative “Pierrot lunaire” inspired the 15-year-old to create a series of prints that concluded with the work “Serenade”. The artist carved the printing plates with a leather knife that he held in his fist. Felixmüller dedicated the series to Schönberg, who invited him to the German premiere of “Gurrelieder” in Leipzig in 1914.
