About the workThe way she throws her opponent onto his back appears effortless. The judo fighter’s facial expression makes it seem like child’s play. Despite the strenuous and quickly executed action, the photograph radiates a lightness due to the accomplished composition. Ernst-Ludwig Bach, who worked as a picture editor and sports photographer in the GDR, captured the scene at the perfect moment, and perhaps enhanced the lighting retrospectively too. Bach probably added the dramatic light and dark shades in the darkroom, where he also decided how to crop the image.
