on display, room 030 About the workFingerprints on photographs are normally a no-go. Lotte Jacobi, however, turned the faux pas into a creative tool by using her fingertips in the darkroom to rework the chemistry on the surface of photographic paper. In this way, she created painterly effects. Jacobi, who came from a German-Jewish family of photographers, had to flee from the National Socialists in 1935 and went into exile in New York. There she became known for her portrait photographs of the international art and cultural scene. At the end of the 1940s, she turned to non-representational photography and created pictures without the use of a camera.
