About the workThe Swiss optician and photographer Carlo Ponti published popular editions of pictures of Venetian sights. In the mid-19th century, the trade in tourist images of the lagoon city flourished. This photograph attributed to Ponti shows the inner courtyard of the Doge's Palace, whose façade faces one of the largest canals in Venice. For many centuries, the palace was an important residence of the government and a symbol of Venice's naval power. Ponti and his contemporaries contributed to the image of Venice, still prevailing today, through the mass dissemination of their images.
