on display, room 009 About the workThis photograph shows the bronze door to the sacristy of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Realised by Jacopo Sansovino in 1545, the images depict the Entombment and Resurrection of Christ. Carlo Naya was one of the most successful photographers in nineteenth-century Venice. His documentation of Venetian art and architecture is an early example of the use of photography as a research aid in the field of art history. The prints were also sold in large volumes.
