Long before photography was recognised as museum-worthy in its own right, it was used as a technical tool for cataloguing objects in museum collections. One of the most successful companies specialising in artistic reproductions in Europe was run by Franz Hanfstaengl in Munich. In the 1860s, one of his tasks was photographing the collection of the Bavarian National Museum. The resulting images bear witness to the aesthetic value that reproduction photography is capable of achieving.
