About the workThe Forum was the centre of cultural and political life in ancient Rome. After the deposition of the emperor in 476 AD, which marked the end of the Western Roman Empire, the site was abandoned. The first excavations took place at the end of the eighteenth century. This photograph was taken before the Roman Forum was fully unearthed by archaeologists and shows the remains of the temple complexes that had been discovered. The image provides a record of newly acquired historical knowledge while testifying to the significance of antiquity for how culture was understood in the nineteenth century.
