About the workCaspar Scheuren made this study for the title page of a chronicle of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen for Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. After abdicating in 1849 in the wake of the principality’s cession to Prussia, he resided with his family in Jägerhof Palace in Düsseldorf from 1852. As a passionate art collector, he maintained close contact with the local artistic community. From 1858 to 1862, Karl Anton was Reich Chancellor in Berlin. Scheuren designed this title page in the 1860s, before the Prince retired to his castle in Sigmaringen in 1871.
