About the workThe portly painter and his equally plump wife do not seem to want for good food. Money for smart clothing is obviously scarcer. Yet the certificates on the wall testify that the artist is a member of various Italian academies and thus a successful painter. It is not known whether Johann Christian Reinhart, who resided in Rome, was portraying a particular colleague here. He himself was well-acquainted with the ups and downs of an artist’s life. Although he was a respected artist, he had to work hard for many years to find financial support from patrons.
