on display, room 015 About the workIn Roman mythology, Cupid is the god of love. He usually appears as a winged, naked child with bow and arrow. By shooting people in the heart, he makes them fall in love. In this unusual depiction, however, he is piercing an open heart – evoking death and suffering rather than love. The signature of the German-Baltic artist Sally von Kügelgen, who lived mainly in Rome, had been painted over at some point for unknown reasons, but was uncovered once again in 2023.
