About the workChristian Adolf Schreyer studied in Frankfurt am Main, Munich and Paris; he also briefly attended the academy in Düsseldorf in 1848. Before making a name for himself with war scenes and motifs from Muslim countries, he was already famous for his depictions of horses and dogs. This animal is an early form of the Affenpinscher, a German dog breed that was equally popular abroad – in England, for example. The carpet and wallpaper indicate that the animal’s owners were wealthy.
