About the workAs an actress and singer, Josephine Doyen appeared in numerous plays in Düsseldorf in 1838 and 1839. She married Caspar Scheuren in 1839, ending her career as a performer. In the lunette on the right of this card thanking people for their condolences following her death in 1885, Saint Cecilia can be seen playing the organ. She is the patron saint of singers and an allusion to the profession of the deceased. This late work by Scheuren, who survived his wife by just two years, was created from a drawing by his final pupil, the Düsseldorf graphic artist Fritz Wilhelm Müller.
