About the workDeath, here in the form of a skeleton, becomes an everyday companion that does not discriminate according to gender, age or social rank. Originating from France, depictions of the “danse macabre” or the dance of death began to spread throughout Europe in the fourteenth century. Adolf Uzarski, who did not fight in the First World War himself, drew on this historical motif to portray the presence of death on the battlefields. Acting as a kind of anti-war memorial, this portfolio of prints has been in the Kunstpalast’s collection since 1917, the year it was produced.
