About the workIn this image, the landscape artist Carl Wilhelm Kolbe interweaves observation of nature with the fancies of the artistic imagination. While the figures are from ancient mythology, the landscape elements can be traced back to a detailed study of nature. Kolbe could find plenty of bizarre trees in the area around his home in Dessau, such as the oak on the right, which has been damaged by its repeated use as a source of wood. Its shape mirrors the nymph’s posture, thus linking her statuesque figure to her surroundings.
