on display, room 011 About the workThe period in Germany between 1815 and the revolution of 1848, which led to the first constitutional National Assembly, is known as the Biedermeier period – an era shaped by the bourgeoisie in which interior design became just as important as art, architecture, music and fashion. The “parlours” designed during this period formed the prototype of modern living rooms. The furniture was simple, functional and cosy, and the primary focus was on quality craftsmanship and carefully selected wood. This bureau combines polished birch surfaces with mahogany and sparse decoration.
