About the workIn the Middle East, water dispensers and confectionery bowls were presented to guests on low tables such as this one. The star-shaped design is typical of the style of the region, as is the geometric inlaid mother-of-pearl decoration. Interest in this type of art surged in Europe in the middle of the nineteenth century – and with it the trade in furniture and crafts from Middle Eastern countries. It became fashionable to decorate entire rooms in an “Arabic style” with fabrics, carpets and objects in bright colours and stylised patterns.
