Originally from Italy, this type of chair spread to other countries in the eastern Mediterranean from the late Middle Ages onwards. This cultural transfer developed with the establishment of new trade routes by Italian merchants, who in return brought silk, ivory, spices, and furs from Asia Minor and China to Europe.
