About the workThis small picture was intended for private admiration rather than an exhibition piece. The subject is a relative of the Düsseldorf painter Otto Grashof. Portraits were a good source of income for Adeline Jaeger, as they were for many women artists of her time. She had to stand up to her father in order to study painting in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. As a young woman she did not want to marry and regretted it when she did. She felt that art was her vocation, but that it was endangered by marriage and motherhood. She continued to work as much as she could.
