not on displayAgainst the initial opposition of her father, Adeline Jaeger was able to receive instruction in painting, first in Frankfurt and then, from 1836, in Düsseldorf. She broke off an early engagement in order to pursue her artistic career. Later, under pressure from her family, she wedded and had five children. Despite marriage and motherhood, she continued to work as an artist. Around 1860, she painted several portraits of the Grashof family. Franz Grashof, born in Düsseldorf, was a respected mechanical engineer. He developed the Grashof Law, named after him, concerning the mechanics of linkages.
