About the workGod’s demand that Abraham should sacrifice his only son as proof of his obedience opens up many creative possibilities. The sculptor Leonhard Kern chose as his motif that moment in the biblical narrative when father and son set off for the sacrificial altar, each of them dwelling on their own thoughts. Kern was not only an outstanding carver, but also a resourceful businessman. Thanks to his specialisation in exquisite, small-format works made of precious materials, he was able to serve the needs of the art-collecting rulers and the wealthy upper classes admirably.
