About the workElector Johann Wilhelm stands triumphantly on a pedestal as a commander. He wears a suit of armour and holds a commander’s staff, both emblems of military power. The idea of the strong ruler is reinforced by the plinth: the club, lion’s hide and laurel wreath symbolise the virtue and deeds of the ancient hero Hercules. The cannons and flags refer to Johann Wilhelm’s victorious and politically successful reign. The intended purpose of this bronze is unclear; it may have been a model for a larger monument that was never realised.
