About the workThe market for luxury items in Europe grew due to increasing long-distance trade and the import of foreign raw materials such as ivory. One of the leading workshops in this regard was that of the Venetian carver Baldassare degli Embriachi. Beginning in 1395, he produced items such as these small altars and boxes. The combination of inlaid wood and animal bone with ivory carvings is typical of his work. Created in large numbers, these artistic objects were exported throughout Europe and imitated beyond Venice.
