About the workEzekiel lived in Babylon in the sixth century BC. He is one of the twelve prophets of the Old Testament who, from a Christian perspective, proclaimed the message of the coming saviour, Jesus Christ. This small enamel depiction portrays Ezekiel as a teacher and admonisher with a stern gaze and raised hand. The plate probably came from a reliquary, a container for the mortal remains of saints. This is suggested by further enamel images of prophets in other museums.
