on display, room 018.4 About the workWith its geometric, abstract shape, this wooden container by Max Benirschke contrasts with the flowery, curving Art Nouveau style of French and Belgian artists that was widespread at the time. Benirschke had studied architecture and design at the School of Applied Arts in his home town of Vienna before the architect Peter Behrens brought him to teach at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts in 1903, where he led the architectural drawing class. In addition to his teaching and his work as an architect, he designed furniture, craft objects and jewellery.
