About the workThe "Freischwinger" cantilever chair is one of the most striking examples of modern furniture design of the twentieth century. In 1926, the designer Mart Stam developed the first chair without back legs, which was based on a rigid tubular metal construction. The Bauhaus architect and designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe succeeded in creating this model in 1927; thanks to the use of cold-bent tubular steel, it has greater elasticity and consequently yields resiliently when sat upon. In the same year, the leather-covered chair was presented for the first time in the "Café Samt und Seide" (Velvet and Silk Café) in Berlin, which was devised and styled by Lilly Reich.
