About the workIn the Middle Ages, believers not only regarded Mary as the Mother of God, but also the Queen of Heaven, and therefore the most important mediator between the faithful and God. This supernatural connection to divine omnipotence is further heightened by the celestial symbol of the canopy, which dates from the same period as the figure but was not originally part of the work. Its upwardly pointed carvings – “pinnacles” – emphasise the size of the figure and make the sculpture stand out from its surroundings at the same time.
