About the workMary gazes lovingly at the infant Jesus, whom she holds protectively in her left arm. Originally, the figure wore a crown and septer, which emphasised her special position as the Mother of God. The focus was on the emotional relationship between mother and child. The sculpture, which was probably part of a small altar group, was made by the sculptor Tilmann Heysacker, who had a large workshop in Cologne that also worked for export. Characteristic of his female figures is the S-swing of the posture and the drapery of the garment.
