About the workIn contrast to the Madonna, the infant Jesus looks out with a lively gaze, his hand raised in a gesture of peace. The unbroken outline of the sculpture indicates that it was originally intended to be placed in a church niche or an altar. Düsseldorf acquired it alongside other works from the famous Hohenzollern Collection, which was sold in 1928. The acquisition was not without controversy, however. The Düsseldorf artistic community protested against it and demanded that the money should be invested in contemporary art.
