About the workThe battle between the archangel Michael and the devil was a central theme of art during the Counter-Reformation, which began around 1545. The motif is emblematic of the hostilities between the Catholic and Protestant churches. The victory of the angel over evil was intended to show Catholic believers the triumph over the false teachings of the Protestants. Such works were therefore placed in prominent positions in churches, often near the altar. The disputes between the denominations often resulted in violent battles and lasted well into the eighteenth century.
