About the workAngelika Kauffmann was one of the most important and successful artists of the eighteenth century. “Single-figure history paintings” were her speciality – depictions of individual figures from historical contexts. In this painting, she portrayed the mourning Roman woman Agrippina as a symbol of love and spousal loyalty beyond death. Kauffmann was an extraordinarily independent artist: she had her own studio, managed her own finances, and her works were highly esteemed by aristocrats and European royalty alike.
