About the work
Odysseus is one of the heroes of Greek mythology. His deeds and his odyssey after his return from the ancient city of Troy were described in the "Iliad" by the poet Homer, who lived around 850 BC. The main scene on this tapestry shows Odysseus with the royal couple of the Phaeacians, who present him with farewell gifts. In a kind of comic strip, other scenes from his journey are shown in the background on the left and right. Such tapestries were part of the representative interior decoration of the European aristocracy.
