About the workAlthough Wilhelm Busch is best known for his humorous illustrated stories, he was also a painter and even studied briefly at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. However, he kept his paintings virtually hidden from the public while he was alive. They are mostly small-format works in earthy tones. Busch was enthusiastic about seventeenth-century Dutch painting, which often had a similar colour scheme. He frequently depicted rural scenes like the one here. Although this was a continuation of art historical traditions, his quick, sketchy style was entirely modern.
