About the workThe dramatic scene is executed in the technique of mezzotint, which is particularly suited to the reproduction of paintings. Its effect is not based on lines used to contour shapes but on the chiaroscuro effects of areas of smooth tonal gradation. The British printmaker Valentine Green was one of the foremost mezzotint artists of the second half of the eighteenth century. He became a member of the Düsseldorf Academy of Art in 1776 and dedicated this print to its founding director Lambert Krahe, who was interested in this printing technique and committed himself to its dissemination.
