Untitled (Light Relief), 1968
Aluminium on hardboard
About the workHeinz Mack makes light present itself. Since the late 1950s, he has been using aluminium as both a medium and a stage: in his Light Reliefs, he uses a sickle and a squeegee to engrave fine dot and line grids into a polished metal sheet. When light falls on it, a shimmering interplay of sheen, shadows and reflections unfolds. The surface seems to be in motion. The work shines as if illuminated from within. This process cannot be captured in a snapshot, because the effect constantly takes on new forms depending on the viewer's perspective.
