About the workUnder certain conditions, sunlight breaks down into its individual components and appears as a rainbow. Such natural phenomena, in which light, colours and movement combine, inspired Heinz Mack to start creating his “Chromatic Constellations” in 1991. The series of works is based on the understanding that light intensity becomes visible in bright colours. The Mönchengladbach-based artist demonstrated this in clearly structured patterns. As in this work, he often combines graduated and monochrome surfaces to create contrasts and emphasise the colours’ vibrancy.
