About the workHorst Egon Kalinowski's work is characterised by the use of worn leather. From the mid-1950s onwards, he employed the material to cover object boxes. Thanks to these so-called Caissons (boxes), the tanned animal skin symbolically retains its original function: to protect and to preserve. In this fragile yet robust-looking piece by the Düsseldorf-born artist, the inside and outside are separated by a leather casing. Both old and new signs of wear and ageing refer to the object’s history.
