About the workThis large-format painting was realised in Dresden around 1911. Like many of his works from the Dresden period, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner gave it an earlier date so that it didn’t seem like he was imitating his French contemporaries. The artist Erich Heckel, a friend, is depicted here next to a female model. The red, blue and green colour zones are probably a consequence of reworking the image. The picture testifies to how Kirchner’s painting style became more angular and his choice of colours more two-dimensional from 1910 onward.
