About the workLike other members of the Brücke artists’ group, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner frequently used children as models. Their behaviour seemed less rehearsed to him than that of adults. What Kirchner was looking for was naturalness, a pivotal turning point, a break with artistic traditions. The subjects of this portrait are presumed to be Marcella Albertine Olga Sprentzel and a girl named Senta. They begin to appear in the artist’s works from 1909. Today, the relationship between the painters and their young models is the subject of critical debate.
