Hence the numerous small, intensely vibrant patches of colour that combine to form the landscape in an almost modular fashion. The colours take on a life of their own that no longer closely resembles reality. Wassily Kandinsky is regarded as a pioneer of abstract art; he realised his first completely non-representational watercolour in 1910. In his quest to liberate himself from the faithful depiction of nature, he created landscapes like this in vivid shades.
